Magnificent Morrigan Crow

Hey peoples,

For the past week, some people have and some people haven't been going swimming in the afternoon. while the other groups are at swimming we have been given 12 options of tasks to do. As I am in swimming I have been given the task to do one of the 12. The task I chose to do was to write a book/movie review of something we have read/watched recently.

I have recently read Nevermoor and the trails of Morrigan Crow, wow it is a great book full of amazing scenes and characters. Nearly everyone is friendly in Nevermoor and I really recommend this book! Here is my review:

I hope this review is really interesting and has encouraged you to give this book a go!

Have you ever read this book? What is your favourite book?

Fantastic Flax Flower

Hey people,

Today a portion of students from our hub are at Athletics Zones so we have one less teacher. Because of this, we can't do our normal Tuesday things, (Maths, Literacy). Instead, we are practicing making Flax Flowers. We are practicing this so that next time we can make a bouquet for Mrs. Pasco,e our principal as she is leaving at the end of the year.

We have learned about flax and how you treat it, how you stay healthy around it, and how you cut it, as well as the actual design of the flowers. You have to treat the flax with respect as if it is a human being, by not stepping on or over it and not leaving it lying in the midst of the floor. You also have to make sure you wash your hands after using it because of the oils on the flax which can make you unwell. When you cut flax you take from the outside, the grandparents. By doing this the children in the middle can grow and the parents can look after them.

There are different types of designs of the flax flowers some simpler than others. I chose to do one that is a little more complicated. It actually turned out quite well:

What design did you do? Did you learn anything?

Cool Ki o rahi animation

Hey peoples,

Yet another cultural post to you all, I hope you're not sick of it yet! This time we had to make a Ki o rahi animation! Right now you're probably thinking 'What in the world is Ki o rahi', well, you're about to find out! It's a very fun and interesting game, this was our task...

Make an animation that explains what Ki o rahi is. This has to be easy for year 3-4 students to follow. At the start write a few paragraphs explaining the myth and legend, behind Ki o rahi.

It was quite an interesting legend, in fact, it was really long so I have written most of it and added a link to the website where you can read the whole thing if you want to!

Here is my animation:

I hope you learned and enjoyed this animation/post!

Cool Cultural Interesting Information

Hey people,

As part of our cultural studies, we learned that New Zealand has so many amazing things that other countries don't have! A few examples we were told to look at were Ta moko, Korowai/Kakahu, and the Haka. These three things have existed in New Zealand for years, even several decades-long.

Our task was to research what the design was, the use, and the presentation. I did mine with Zara! Here is our slide presentation:

I found it quite interesting to research, read, and write about. I hope you did too!

Hope you learned something!

Hungry, Happy, Hangi

Hey people,

At school, we have been learning about our culture and what makes New Zealand so special and unique. One of the things we had to research about is the Hangi. We had to make a poster that shows the differences between a Hangi from the past and from the present.

In the past, you had to dig a pit and after finding stones wait a long time for them to heat up over a fire. Then you put the food in flax baskets and put them in the hole. Cover with sacks, sheets, and dirt. Nowadays you use a Hangi cooker, which has provided stones, metal crates, and you don't have to dig a pit!

Here is my poster/step by step in the present and past:

Sorry, the photo's a bit blurry, if it doesn't show up I will try and take a clearer photo over the next couple of days!

I really enjoyed making this but my hand did get quite tired after writing it all!

Hope you learned something!

Happy Holidays and Stunning School!

Hey peoples,

I hope you have all had an amazing holiday and are ready to take on the last term of the year. I have had a great holiday, I went to Methin with Zara and stayed at her batch for a couple of nights. The next day I went to Hanmer with some friends and family, and then the next day we all went to Akaroa! But now we all need to knuckle down and start concentrating on work and make sure to listen and pay attention to classes.

In literacy, I have been working on my film with Pippa, Riley, and Olivia. We are making a Horror film about a suspected murderer. This film will involve a lot of violence and distress. Here is scene one and the script for it:

Hope you are interested, I will post the film on my blog once it is completed!

Fantastic Fantasy Essay

Hey peoples,

Over the past 4-5 weeks, my literacy group has been working on our video essays. Previously we have learnt about all the different genres and their conventions. I chose to do Fantasy which ended being a 7.30minute video essay.

Brilliant Blast-Off

Hey peoples,

After a long process of building and creating our rockets, we have finally launched them. We did this near the fitness track on the backfield. Pippa, Caprice, Tilly, and I's rocket didn't really go to plan, it only flew about 6m but it went quite a decent way up! I think the reason it didn't go that far was that the paint was all blotchy, and because we had 4 bolts all spaced around in our nose-cone, (next time we think we need to put a couple in the lid).

Here is a video clip of our flight:

Think before you throw!

Hey peoples,

We have been learning a lot of coding skills over the year. First, we had to go through a tutorial/practice that helped us learn how to debug and work with Python. Python is a coding website that is a bit like Scratch, (it has all the sprites, stages, actions, etc). My PSA I coded is all about how lucky we are to have the money we have and that we shouldn't take it for granted. I chose this message because there are a lot of people out there in the world who need our help. This is for everyone because it isn't just up to a few people to help, everyone needs to do their bit.

Here is my code:

Here are a few screenshots:

This caption shows when the boy just chucks a full water bottle into the bin, the other person is poor, she doesn't have enough money for clean water.

This caption shows when a girl is telling the boy that if he doesn't want the water then perhaps donate it to the poor.

This caption shows you what is right, 'if you don't want something that costs money then think about who else might need it'.

I hope you have learnt something today about what you might want to do in the future.

High Jump Hullabaloo!

Hey peoples,

For literacy, we have just finished writing our books for children. We had to go through a process of writing an I.P.A.R.C (intro, problem, action, resolution, conclusion), character descriptions, and story draft and then finally the book! This book I wrote is about not giving up and trying your hardest, (positively changes everything)!:

Link to book!

Hope you enjoyed it!

Launch Away!

Hey peoples,

If you didn't already know we are learning about rockets at school for inquiry. We have finished our prototype and have tested and reported on it. I am in a group with Caprice, Pippa, and Tilly. We have reported on our rocket and are quite happy with our result:

Exellent E hia!

Hey peoples,

Hope you're all well and staying safe from Covid-19 and other winter illnesses. Can't wait for spring to arrive.

For Maori, we have learnt multiple games, in a group we have made a poster and video on how to play E hia, a game slightly similar to rock, paper scissors. Here is our poster with QR code to video. If you don't have a scanner with you then I will put a link to the video under the poster:

Spectacular Samoan with an Awesome Animation!

Hey peoples,

As we all know Covid-19 has started up again in Auckland so make sure you stay safe by washing/sanitizing your hands often and coughing or sneezing into your elbow. None of us want to go back in lockdown so try and help keep others safe. At school, we already have things canceled at the moment like winter sport, but we will just have to wait until Friday to find out what happens next.

In class, we have been learning Samoan. We have now learnt how to greet someone in this language. This slideshow will tell you everything you need to know about having a simple conversation. The last slide will contain definitions of what the Samoan greetings mean. Here it is, click play to start:

Absolute Parachute, (basically)

Hey peoples,

For inquiry we are looking at rockets and space. We have engineers come in on Tuesday afternoons who teach us about rockets. But, if rockets go up with energy they must come down, and a safe way is air!

On Thursday and today (Monday), we were given the task to construct a parachute. Our goal was to try and make it go as slow as possible. We also had to attach 2 hex nuts to the parachute. We were to do this in groups of three, I did it with Zara and Pippa

Here is a photo of our initial and final diagram:

For the initial design we used fabric and string we thought this would work well because the fabric was light. When we first tested it by standing on the chair it went fairly well. But when we took it upstairs to test it it spun in circles rather fast.

The final design we thought we needed something that would block the air out so it went rather slow. We decided to use thick paper. When we got it tested it took 1.83secs to get to the bottom. We decided to add an extra layer of paper that had space for air to make it billow out. This made it go slower (2.00secs), we were quite pleased with the result.

In the future to improve I think we need to think about how we can add more materials to make it go slower but not add too many materials so it is too heavy.

Here is a photo:

Spectacular Space

Kia ora, hello peoples,

It's great to be back blogging with you guys. I hope you all had a fantastic break over the holidays!

So, for inquiry we are looking deeply into space. Over the week we got given a tic tac toe grid that had different things to research about space on it. We had to do 3 in a row of the activities. I am going to show and tell you about one of the activities I did.

I decided to research about how people in space do daily things like washing their hair. We had to write about 4 of these things and explain why they have do do it, ( I wrote about five ).
Here are my results:

Spectacular Southern Lights

Kia ora, hello peoples,

Today we have learnt about the Southern Lights. The Southern Lights appear in the South Pole. They are generally green but are sometimes blue, red, or violet. Now you may be wondering what causes the Southern Lights. Well, they are caused by the sun, little particles reflect off the sun and down towards the Earth. The Earth has this sort of magnet that stops most of the particles from getting in, but some manage to sneak through. The particles excite the oxgen and nitrogen atoms which causes them to light up. That is the Southern Lights!

For our artwork today we made the Southern Lights. First we had to rip white paper in the shape of mountains and stick it at the bottom of a piece of black paper. We then dipped a paintbrush into white paint and brushed the bristles back so it made lots of dots on our paper for the stars. We then had to use chalk pastels to make the lights. There were more steps aswell but I find it very hard to explain!
Here is my art:

Amazing Matariki Magic

Kia ora, hello peoples,

For our Maori Studies we have been learning about Matariki. We had to pick out of six options which way we would like to share our learning. I chose to make an animation with a voiceover. It had to be something that a little kid could understand.

I chose to do mine with Zara. We chose our main character to be an alien as it is based up in the sky. This animation will show you how to find Matariki and what constellations you will have to pass on the way.  S tSudies we have

Amazing ASCII !

Kia ora, hello peoples,

Today we have learnt about Binary and ASCII.

Binary is a number system that uses 1’s and 0’s to represent all of our normal set of numbers.  You can use the place values as multiples of 2 to work out how to do it for yourself!  Try watching this video to give it a go yourself!

ASCII is set of encoded symbols that a computer uses to turn Binary into letters and other symbols from the English language (like what is on our keyboard).  I turned my initials into binary numbers, and then turned those binary numbers into an ASCII code!  Using colours to represent the 1’s and 0’s, my initials in ASCII can be represented by the pattern you see in my image below!

What do you think?  Have you ever tried encoding anything in binary or ASCII? Can you work out how to write my initials in ASCII from the pattern above? How about trying to write your intials in ASCII!?

Worried World

Kia ora, hello peoples,

This week in inquiry we have been looking at meanigful art. By meaningful I mean art that has a meaning, or art that shows what is happening in the world. For our task we first had to get into a group of 3 and go around 12 pictures and write down a sentence of what they mean to us.

Next we had to pick one of those pictures and write about what it means to us. The picture I chose had countries running down a drain. Here is what I thought of it:

Do you think you could help the world?
Have you ever had a look at meaningful art?

Sarcastic Schoolwork

Kia ora, hello peoples,

For inquiry we are learning about irony. Our task was to partner up with someone, pick one irony and make a comic on google drawings. We had to give it 4 scenes and write text with an image for each one.

I did mine with Zara, we chose to do verbal irony. Verbal irony is not always but sometimes sarcasm, our example is sarcasm. We have chosen to give it a school theme about homework. Here is our comic:

Have you ever made a comic? Have you learnt something from my post?

Cool Counters

Kia ora, hello peoples,

This is my maths blog post this week, Mr Gillstrom has taught us a new game involving counters. We had to start with 21 counters and be the last person to take a counter away to win. We could take either 1,2, or 3 counters away at a time. The main aim of this maths session was to try and work out how we could always win.

Here is my explanation on how you can always win:

How about trying it out!?

2nd wonderful week out of lockdown!

Kia ora, hello peoples,

Over the past week I have done many more activities/work. This post is going to show you my art and inquiry task:

For inquiry we have been studying global issues. Global issues are issues that are happening around the world. First we had to make a word art with as many global issues as we could think of on it. Then we had to pick a global issue and look a bit further into it. I chose poverty. We had to find at least 4 videos to do with our global issue and write a description next to each of them. All of my information was put on a slideshow, here are my findings:

Our art task was to create some koru art, koru is the Maori word for loop. We first had to sketch out our design, then go over it in vivid so it was clear. Next we got pastels and coloured our design in, we had to blend part of our design aswell. Whatever leftover blank space on our paper we got to dye it. Here is my koru art:

Have you ever thought about global issues and how bad they are? Have you made a koru art before? If you have what kind of design did you do?

See ya later!

Yours sincerely,

Sophie

Fabulous First Week Back

Kia ora, hello peoples,

Lockdown is over, hurray! I am so pleased to be back at school, it is great to see all my friends! Normality is back, and work is now much easier as we can just ask for assistance rather than emailing and waiting! I am going to show you some of my work I did this week.

First up is my numeracy work. Mr Gillstrom has taught us how to use Kaggle (kaggle.com). Kaggle is a website that is a bit like a calculator but a little more complex. There are a few symbols that would change though like; a times symbol would equal a astrisk, a exponent to would equal a **2 and so on. Here are a couple examples when i used Kaggle:

Equation: 23+(8+4-10) =

Equaton: (92- 8 x 2) ÷ 5 =

For literacy we are creating our own website about The Wizard of Oz. We are making this on sites.google.com. We get 4 weeks to complete it and can draft our work out into a doc first. On our website we have to include the following:

  • atleast 3 important characters
  • atleast 3 important themes
  • and atleast 3 important symbols
I am going to have 6 characters, 3-4 themes, and 3-4 symbols. At the moment I am researching/planning out my characters descriptions. Here is one of my descriptions:

Have you ever used Kaggle for maths? If you haven't, why not give it a go!?
Have you created a website before? What was it about?

See ya later,

Yours sincerely,

Sophie

A mouthful of MATHS, LITERACY, and ... FRIDAY/FRI-YAY TASKS!!!

Kia ora, hello peoples,

Over the week I have done multiple maths and literacy tasks but I have picked my favourite ones to show you. I am also going to show you my Friday task which I did today.

So first for my maths task, Mr Gillstrom set us a fun and challenging task to do over two days. We first had to fill out a table that had 21 multiplication & division fraction equations to solve. Mr Gillstrom accidently put a subtraction problem in there but I decided to still do it, as the day before we did a similar sheet but with addition & subtraction. My answers looked a bit like this:

After we solved them we had to complete an escape room that Mr Gillstrom designed. It was rather fun but quite challenging. If Mr Gillstrom set another escape room to do I would be happy to give it a go.

Now for literacy, as our focus is the Wizard of Oz we had to write a short story that partly is to do with the Wizard of Oz. By partly I mean that we had to take a chunk of the Wizard of Oz and turn it upside down. As Oz is such a happy place by 'upside down' we had to make the part of the story we chose creepy, like as creepy as we want. Our short story had to be 300 words minimum, and there was no maximum. I made my story 570 words long, here it is,
P.S. it is over all of the following 3 slides:

Creepy right?

And now my Friday task. The task I chose to do was; design an animal enclosure. We could pick any animal we liked as we made sure we put our animal in its habitat where it can survive. There were also a few questions we had to answer, here were the questions with my answers:

  • What is similar about the enclosures and what is different?
The similarities are that the animals are all in a habitat where they can live and survive. Depending on what food they need will change there habitat a lot as they need to be around there diet. Differences are like I said before, if they are a carnivore, herbivore, or any other type of ore, whatsoever they need to be around there diet.

  • Why would there need to be differences about for each enclosure?
Some animals need to live around lots of trees but others may need to be around water or a desert. Also animals need to live in the right temperature for them, otherwise they might not survive.

  •  Is it the same for humans?
Animals habitat is completely different to a human's because nature, like it is to humans, is a big part of an animals life. Maybe nature to animals is more important than it is to humans as we humans live in man-made (a house) and animals live in the outdoors.

Anyway, I decided to make a panda's enclosure because my favourite animal is a panda. I made sure it had a stream to drink from with rocks in it so the panda can cross from one side to the other, a lot of trees and bamboo, so the panda has shelter and food, and a grassy area where the panda can play. Here is my drawing:

Have you learnt about fraction addition, subtraction, multiplication or division?
Do you like horror? Have you ever written a creepy story?
If you were to design an animal enclosure what would it be? What is your favourite animal?

See ya later!

Yours sincerely,

Sophie  :D

Creative Cake

Kia ora, hello peoples,

It is yet again Friday, which means there are more fun tasks the teachers have set. The task I chose to do today was; design your dream birthday cake! This task was really fun, but there was some criteria we had to stick to. We had to have the following:

  • a theme
  • at least five layers of cake
  • only made of edible stuff
  • the flavour of each layer
  • the decorations for each layer
  • colours for each layer
  • and any surprise(s)
One of the first ideas that popped into my head for the theme was Harry Potter. I have liked Harry Potter for a few years now and it wasn't to hard to come up with a design for the cake. I made a five tier cake with the five flavours. Here are the layers from bottom to top; chocolate, choc chip, orange, lemon and vanilla. The chocolate cake was brown, the choc chip cake was light brown with choc chips, the orange cake was orange, the lemon cake was yellow and the vanilla cake was a light beige colour. In between each layer was some strawberry buttercream.

On the outside of the cake it was coated with chocolate icing and there are shortbread cookies with icing of lightning bolts and glasses stuck all around the outside of the cake. The surprise fills the whole centre of the cake, it is raspberry jam!

Here is an image of the inside of my cake:

Here is the outside of my cake:

Here is the birds-eye view of my cake:

Would you like to design a cake ? If so what flavours and what theme would it be?

Fabulous Fabric Fun! 🧵😀

Kia ora, hello bloggers,

This task I am going to show you would definitely be one of my top tasks I have done in lockdown. I am blogging this a bit late but it took longer than I anticipated. This task was one of the Technology Tasks that were set on Friday and I finished it Tuesday evening! I am quite pleased with my final product and I am glad I took on the challenge!

The Technology Task I decided to do was Fabric Fun. I had to find a recycled material and sew something out of it. I hand-sewed a cushion, here are the materials/items I used:
Left over blind material ( for the cover ), my old pillow ( for the stuffing ), buttons ( for decorating ) thread, a needle and scissors.

It started out like the photo above and the final product was this:

Throughout this process I learnt two things. 1; How to sew a button onto fabric and 2; How to do the invisible stitch. My buttons are quite sturdy and the invisible stitch is nearly invisible!

I now have a homemade decoration for my couch in the lounge!

See ya later!

Yours sincerely,

Fabulous Food Truck 🧁🚚

Kia ora, hello peoples,

On Friday's we get given a list of tasks we can choose from. The three options this week were; design a food truck, create a made up animal, design a flag that represents your family. I decided to design a food truck.

The food truck had to meet the following criteria:

  • what it sells (only one type of food)
  • a menu that has four differnt variations of that food
  • what type of vehicle it is (eg van, car, truck)
  • how it looks when it is shut
  • how it looks when it is open
  • the logo
  • and what the aprons look like
My food truck sells four variations of cupcakes; chunky chocolate, choc chip extreme, vanilla decorative and rich red velvet. The company is called Cupcake Express. It was a double decker bus but it now is a double decker food truck.

Here is the menu:

This the layout of my food truck:

This is the truck when it is shut up and ready to move:

This is the truck when it is open and ready for customers:

Here is the apron, it has the logo on it:

I hope you liked my food truck. What kind of food truck would you open if you had the choice?

Good bye for now!

Sophie :D

Terrific two days

Kia ora, hello peoples,

Over the past two days I have written two more slides. One about perseverance and one about home.

Yesterday I did one about perseverance. Mr Shaw gave us 3 questions about The Wizard of Oz and we had to answer as many as we could.  I answered all of them and posted it onto a slideshow where we had to post our answeres under our name.
Here is mine:
Today's task was to answer 3 questions about the differance between Oz and Kansas. Oz is a bright and colourful place with bright and happy people. Where Kansas is a dark and grey place full of miserable people that never smile. Kansas is Dorothy's home.
Here is my work:

Precious poppy🥀

Kia ora, hello peoples,

Today is Friday! The teachers have set us some fun and creative tasks to do. One of the ones I did was to create a poppy.

I needed to use either a New World or Warehouse bag ( or just a red bag ), some black material, a nail, a hammer, scissors and a wooden board. I used all of them but instead of a wooden board I used a wooden spoon. I also stuck a rubber over the back where the nail stuck out so I didn't prick myself.

Here is my poppy:

The Base of a Brain

Kia ora, hello peoples,

Today we had a task based on the Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz. As he admits he has no brains, we had to write about what we think brains are and if brains just mean we are smart.  We also had to list a quote with it.

I had a couple of quotes and a description:

Creative Courage

Kia ora, hello peoples,

A literacy task I did today was to write about on a slide what courage means to us. We had to list a quote and an example with it. We did this task because the lion in The Wizard of Oz had no courage and was a coward. He wanted courage though.

My quote and example was about thinking positively and giving it a go:

Having a Heart

Kia ora, hello peoples,

Today in literacy we had to write on a slide on what having a heart or what having heart means to us and then give an example of it. The example could be in real life, a book or a movie.

I chose to write about what having a heart means. My example I gave was from James and the Giant Peach:

Perhaps you learnt something from that?! Until next time,

Yours sincerely

Sophie
